Even talk of this victory as one of sport's finest ever comebacks feels somewhat out of place, given Woods' place as, perhaps, golf's ultimate player.

"I had serious doubts after what transpired a couple of years ago", Woods said. "This is just fantastic!"

That Tiger was able to win the toughest test in golf on a both a broken leg and torn ACL is something that's otherworldly and would rank No. 1 for nearly all other golfers. "It's what I watched as a kid".

As the years ticked by from 2008 and an injury-riddled Woods got stuck for more than a decade on 14 major titles, four short of Nicklaus's record, the "Golden Bear" kept saying he still thought his mark was in jeopardy.

The question now is whether Woods can catch up with Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 majors. Tiger Woods should be able to outfit his whole family in green jackets and parade through the streets in triumph, but the "rules" instead state that he can only keep this one green jacket at his home for a year, then he has to return it to Augusta and can only wear it when he's on the grounds.

'Next year it won't be a course where I have never played well before, I'll have a few good rounds under my belt.

Woods was two behind beginning the day, shot 70 and needed just a bogey at the last to win.

And that's when all hell broke loose at Augusta.

When Schauffele, who started the day five strokes off the lead of Francesco Molinari, birdied the 14th and 15th holes, he surged into a tie for the lead at 12 under par. "Whether he admits it or not, I'm sure this one is one of the most important or biggest [wins]".

Koepka, one of four players from the final two groups who hit into the water on No. 12, rallied with an eagle on the 13th, narrowly missed another eagle on the 15th and was the last player with a chance.

Just off the 18 green, Woods hugged his mother as he had his late father Earl in 1997 and held his children, his back more than up to the task as the crowd chanted his name, a rare tribute, and rivals congratulated him as he entered the clubhouse.

That's largely due to the intense focus the TV broadcast placed on Woods, said Apex president Eric Smallwood.

It will go down as a where-were-you moment.

"I did think [this day] would come", he told CNN.

While it looked like the old Woods on the golf course this week, it was a different Tiger Woods Sunday afternoon in the Masters interview room - the poshest interview room in all of sports, by the way - where each reporter has his own desk and microphone. The immediate wake of such a win, I've learned, is for celebrating it unequivocally, not bothering people with details about Muhammad Ali or Monica Seles. It's a long time! "We're creating new memories for them".

"Now I'm able to play golf again, and do it at an elite level again, which is something I'm just very blessed to be able to have that opportunity again", Woods said.
