Sacramento Kings Hire Luke Walton As The Team’s New Head Coach

He was sacked Thursday, one day after the Kings' season ended at 39-43, the team's best record since its last playoff appearance in 2005-06. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka will run the search, a source told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

"We would like to thank Luke for his dedicated service over the last three years", Pelinka said in a team statement. "We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward".

It looks like former Lakers coach Luke Walton won't get unemployed for long.

"They are losing a guy who knows the game as well as anybody I've ever met", said Kerr, who had Walton on his coaching team before he left to join the Lakers in 2016.

The Lakers reportedly had no idea what LaVar, Foster and Lonzo had planned until it was nearly too late. But at that time, Walton didn't even interview with the Kings. He's been in professional journalism for more than 18 years. Luckily for Kerr, the state of the Warriors is the polar opposite of that of the Lakers.

That marked an improvement of just two wins on the previous season despite four-time MVP LeBron. Los Angeles missed the playoffs in all three campaigns. The Lakers won 26 games in Walton's first season and 35 in his second.

Walton, 39, parted company with the Lakers on Friday in what was described by the team as a mutual separation. "Obviously it was frustrating, the injuries, the inability to have a consistent lineup was frustrating and hard for them". The Lakers' season fell apart during the longest injury absence of James' career, and they ended the season with almost every important player in their young core sidelined by injuries.

Many considered him the unofficial Coach of the Year for his guidance of the then-champion Warriors at the start of the 2015-16 season in place of an ailing Steve Kerr.
