Kirstjen Nielsen was miscast as Trump’s ‘bad cop’ on immigration

As Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen was the government official responsible for border security.

Last summer the administration had separated more than 2,500 children from their families before worldwide outrage forced Trump to halt the practice and a judge ordered them reunited.

Nielsen went into the White House on Sunday to meet with Trump. Colbert may not have been sympathetic but he was a little surprised that Trump thought her a softie: "Sure, she puts kids in cages, but Trump was upset because Nielsen hasn't enacted stricter immigration rules".

"When even the most radical voices in the administration aren't radical enough for President Trump, you know he's completely lost touch with the American people", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. That statute authorizes the president to name as acting secretary any Senate-confirmed government officer and any other senior DHS employee who has been with the department for at least 90 of the previous 365 days.

"Miller's going to clean house", said a former White House official, calling Alles "Kelly's best friend".

The United We Dream director said that "beneath the frenzy", immigration enforcement agencies such as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and CBP "are getting steadily stronger", with Trump's Fiscal Year 2020 budget proposing a significant funding increase for both agencies. Nielsen "believed the situation was becoming untenable" with Trump "becoming increasingly unhinged about the border crisis and making unreasonable and even impossible requests", a senior administration official told CNN on Sunday. Eastern time, Nielsen tweeted again, this time stating that she has "agreed to stay on as Secretary through Wednesday, April 10th to assist with an orderly transition and ensure that key DHS missions are not impacted".

Never mind that, if Nielsen were any tougher, she'd run a high risk of breaking the law.

Sen. Susan Collins of ME said Tuesday having participated in creating the department more than a decade ago she knows "these are vital positions". "But ultimately she implemented them, whether she did it quickly or slowly", he said.

President Donald Trump had had it. "So he just needs someone who can be crueler to children than Kirstjen Nielsen", Colbert said of the job search.

Late Monday, a federal judge in San Francisco issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration policy forcing asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico.

Standing outside her home in Alexandria, Virginia, on Monday, Nielsen sounded just as loyal to Trump as she had at the border.

But there's no doubt that the president is exasperated with the flood of immigrants at the border, tweeting on Monday: "Country is full!"

The original policy called for the prosecution of individuals crossing the border illegally between ports of entry, which resulted in children being separated from their parents.

People familiar with immigration discussion said family separation is one of many suggestions that Trump and his aides were eyeing to tackle the problem of an ever-growing number of Central American families crossing into the U.S. The people were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Donald Trump, Jr. also chimed in writing, "I see that the head of the Farrakhan Fan Club, @IlhanMN, took a short break from spewing her usual anti-semitic bigotry today to accuse a Jewish man of being a "white nationalist" because she apparently has no shame".
