Charlotte Russe is closing more than 400 stores around the US, including at Gateway Mall in Lincoln.

Other major brands that have recently been forced to close stores include Payless ShoeSource, Bon-Ton, Victoria's Secret, Sears, Gymboree, and the Gap.

The company announced on its website Wednesday night that sales will start Thursday, March 7 at all remaining stores.

In February, the company announced their plans to close almost 100 of their stores. In a court filing, the company said it "suffered from a dramatic decrease in sales and in-store traffic" and struggled with "the burden of maintaining a large brick-and-mortar presence".

About 8,700 employees work for the chain, which was founded in 1975.

Its St. Cloud location is inside Crossroad's Center.

Similar to Toys "R" Us, Charlotte Russe hadn't originally meant to shutter its stores.

Charlotte Russe operates stores in Springfield, Branson, Osage Beach, Joplin, Rogers and Fayetteville.

Retailers often file for bankruptcy with the intention of staying in business, only to end up closing all of their stores during the bankruptcy process.
