Despite striking visuals and confirmation of the return of some fan-favorite characters, the trailer was met with mixed reception on social media. "Y'all need to trust me more often!"

"I'm open to Will Smith as Genie", Wasp Sting wrote on YouTube.

To drive the point home, Smith posted a screenshot of his blue Genie during the awards show. "Genie, wishes, lamp, none of that ringing a bell?" asks a CGI Smith (so much for a live-action Aladdin). Maybe, then, the better, tougher question is, is there a reason why Will Smith's Genie should exist?

Disney's Aladdin trailer features Will Smith as the Genie and it has already inspired memes about the CGI character.

Aladdin will be helmed by Guy Ritchie, with Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine and Will Smith as the Genie in the sprawling city of Agrabah. The film's antagonist, Jafar, was also seen, but seemed less than enthused according to some. "Aladdin and Jasmine have different outfits, why not just Will Smith in a cool genie outfit", she tweeted, raising a valid point about how easy it is for awful CGI to completely ruin what could have been an fantastic movie. The Genie reminded some people of Tobias Funke from Arrested Development.

"I have worked at most of the studios, and Disney just knows what they are doing".

Will Smith previously admitted he initially found the task of playing the Genie a daunting one, telling Entertainment Weekly: "Whenever you're doing things that are iconic, it's always terrifying".

Smith himself, however, appeared to be into his final form in Aladdin.
