The UFC will stage its first pay-per-view of 2019 from Australia, and fight fans at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne - home of the Australian Open - will see two massive middleweight matchups.

Whittaker reportedly complained of pain in his abdomen around midnight of the previous night and was soon taken to the hospital.

The loss of Whittaker, who is on a nine-fight win streak, will certainly be a massive disappointment for many fans with UFC 234 tickets.

UFC's rising star Israel Adesanya (15-0) and Anderson Silva (34-8) will now headline UFC 234, with the victor promised a shot at the title later in the year although now with Whittaker off the card the potential date is uncertain.

Elevated to the co-main is the lightweight matchup between American Lando Vannata and Brazilian Marcos Mariano.

This is the second time that Whittaker was scheduled to defend the UFC middleweight title in Australia, only for injury to prevent such a thing from happening.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the news to ESPN on Saturday.

ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto said that White told him the hernia was in no way weight cut related.

"The Ultimate Fighter 17" victor has been working for a chance at UFC gold for a long time. Adesanaya vs. Silva will remain a three-round contest. Now, Adesanya gets the biggest fight of his career thanks to a UFC card being suddenly Whittaker-less again.
