Trump Warns Turkey Against Hitting Syrian Kurds

He said the USA envoy for Syria, Jim Jeffrey, had traveled to northeast Syria this week and would soon go to Ankara for talks, including on moving forward a UN-led political process to end the eight-year long conflict in Syria.

Ibrahim Kalin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesperson has taken to Twitter to respond to a recent comment by the U.S. president, who warned Ankara of "economic devastation" should it target US-backed Kurdish forces in Syria.

President Donald Trump last month announced he would withdraw USA forces from Syria, declaring they had succeeded in their mission to defeat IS and were no longer needed. Apart from that, the Kurds, an Iranian ethnic group, found in parts of Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey, make up the majority of US-allied fighters fighting in the Syrian civil war against President Bashar al-Assad's regime, CNN reported.

Speaking in Abu Dhabi, Mr Pompeo said the U.S. recognised "the Turkish people's right and Mr Erdogan's right to defend their country from terrorists".

"Turkey fights against terrorists, not Kurds".

Pompeo stressed those fighting alongside the USA are not terrorists and deserve protection.

Erdogan said Bolton was making a "serious mistake".

Trump's impulsive decision to withdraw troops from Syria was announced on December 19 a year ago, after declaring the Islamic State (ISIS) to have been fully "destroyed", created a rift between him and the USA military.

No U.S. personnel have left Syria yet, according to a Pentagon spokesman.

In a rare acknowledgment that French troops were also in Syria, he said they would leave when there is a political solution in the country.

Special representative for Syria Jim Jeffrey, a former USA envoy to Turkey and Iraq, is expected to return to Turkey to continue discussions, Pompeo added.

The withdrawal began with shipments of military equipment, USA defense officials said.

What has Mike Pompeo said? Stressing that Turkey has a significant position with regard to coming up with a solution and taking steps for stability in Syria, Çavuşoğlu said active diplomacy and efforts to prevent humanitarian crises have made the country a major player in world diplomacy.

"Mr @realDonaldTrump It is a fatal mistake to equate Syrian Kurds with the PKK, which is on the United States terrorists list, and its Syria branch PYD/YPG", spokesman Ibrahim Kalin wrote on Twitter.

Colonel Sean Ryan, the coalition spokesman, said: "The SDF is making great progress and continues to liberate more territory once held by ISIS (Islamic State), but the fight continues".
