This year, at CES 2019, HTC has just announced an all-new PC HMD called the Vive Cosmos, as well as a precision eye-tracking enabled version of the Vive Pro called the Vive Pro Eye.

On many occasions, VRFocus has discussed eye-tracking technology and how it can be merged with virtual reality (VR) headsets to provide an even more immersive experience for users, whilst reducing the computational power needed via foveated rendering. The Vive Pro Eye features eye-tracking, so the headset can tell what you're looking at in virtual space. It seems like a flawless fit for HTC's new flagship, not an also-ran like the Vive Pro Eye.

Let's cover the more interesting announcement first, yeah? Additionally, HTC has partnered with Mozilla to make Firefox Reality the default web browser on all Vive VR headsets.

HTC's second headset, the Vive Pro Eye, is similar to the Cosmos with its dual front-facing cameras, but stands out by including eye-tracking tech.

Meanwhile, the Vive Cosmos will run a new platform called "Vive Reality System". HTC has said that it can also be connected to a smartphone and the teaser video in their official tweet suggests the same. According to TechRadar, the Vive Cosmos is compatible with more than just the PC, potentially mobile phones and tablets. No, as Tobii eye tracking and many others have already begun to prove with their own ocular devices, eye tracking is a quick and easy way of interacting with software: such as navigating menus or interacting with games.

There aren't enough details though - not for Vive Reality, not Vive Cosmos, not Vive Pro Eye, none of it. Oculus has mastered the art of revealing new products. With the inclusion of higher-quality images, this technology will also help in hands-free interactions and accessibility options for those who aren't able to use full-motion controllers.

That built-in eye-tracking feature is reducing the overall graphics requirements required to run VR apps while it's also permitting devs to focus the users on what they want. The current $8.99 a month Viveport subscription service only allows access to 5 VR titles a month, with discounted packages for those that agree to pay for more subscription time in advance. At the very least we know it's coming.

The best I can say is the Vive Cosmos has potential. And it is so confident in its VR ecosystem that it's opening up an unlimited subscription tier for all the VR experiences you can get.
