Gregg Williams relieved of duties by Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns selected offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens to be their new head coach Wednesday.

Gregg Williams, who stepped in the interim head coach position when Hue Jackson was sacked, was fired by the team some time later, but he wasn't bitter about it.

The most interesting name is Ryan Lindley, who not only is connected to Kitchens through this Browns job, but he was also a quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals from 2012-2014 while Kitchens was on staff.

The Cleveland Browns have relieved interim head coach Gregg Williams of his duties, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.

It is unclear when the hiring of Kitchens will be announced by the team. He earned his spot as head coach after the Browns made a huge turnaround during the second half of the season, in large part due to his development of young franchise QB Baker Mayfield.

It's a spectacular rise for Kitchens, who began the season as the team's running backs coach.

He revamped the offensive scheme, using multiple formations and tweaking the game plan to include calls that he knew his players were comfortable running.

After starting the season at 2-5-1, the Browns finished their year at 5-3 following the coaching change, matching their best win total in a decade.

The barrel-chested Kitchens became a fan favorite in a city that loves underdogs.

"I always felt like I lived life every day like it could be your last, but what an incident like that makes you realize and thankful for are the friends that you have", Kitchens told the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram in November. The Browns instead went with a younger, hungry, first-time head coach, and tried to get ahead of the curve on getting the "next big thing".

Kitchens is the fourth coach hired by the Haslams since they bought the team in 2012.
