The Press Trust of India news agency reported that numerous dead were children who were returning from school.

The bus completely submerged after falling into VC canal at Kanakanamaradi of Pandavapura taluka, they said, adding bodies of 23 victims was fished out.

Among the confirmed dead were 13 women and 10 children.

At least 25 people, believed to be mostly school children, have been killed after a bus crash in India. The incident took place in Mandya which is 105km from Bengaluru.

According to the locals, the bus plunged in the canal around 12.25pm.

There are fears the victims were unable to escape from the bus because it had fallen on its side - trapping the doors on the floor of the canal.

Farmers working in nearby fields started rescue work immediately and used rope to try and save passengers. The driver of the bus lost control after colliding with a buffalo and plunged off the bridge into Mahanadi river bed, an eyewitness said. I believe the driver was not driving properly, I will find out.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi condoled the deaths in the bus accident in Mandya on Saturday.

The chief minister has, meanwhile, asked the district commissioner and district in-charge minister CS Puttaraju to look into rescue operations, the report said.

"All the appointments of the Chief Minister have been cancelled for the day.An award ceremony that was to be held later in the evening has been cancelled till further notice", the Chief Minister's Office tweeted.
