Accelerate surges late to win Breeders' Cup Classic

A Kentucky man was arrested after he allegedly mounted a horse at Churchill Downs and tried to ride onto the track during Saturday's Breeder Cup, multiple media outlets reported.

Mendelssohn was still in front when they turned for home, but he couldn't hold off the challenge of 5-2 favorite Accelerate, who came wide through the last turn and swept to the lead, winning by a length from 28-1 shot Gunnevera.

The race lacked the retired three-year-old star with with Accelerate starting favourite.

The wait is over for highly respected trainer John Sadler, but he wasn't all that interested in talking about winning his first Breeders' Cup race after years of trying. Second in last year's Distaff at Del Mar, Abel Tasman has eight wins and four seconds in 15 career starts and was last year's Eclipse Award victor as top 3-year-old filly.

"I went half a length up and saw Ryan (Moore) in difficulty", said Dettori. The $6 million Cup Classic is the marquee race that could help determine which thoroughbred ends up as Horse of the Year. After his maiden win at Del Mar, he went on to take the Grade I Del Mar Futurity and Grade I American Pharoah at Santa Anita.

Buick said Line of Duty gets extra points because of how the race was won after he jumped out to a good start. "He's had a great year and he looks great, so we're really looking forward to this weekend". Baffert said Game Winner will get a rest before pointing toward the races again in the spring.

Gunnevera, Thunder Snow and early pace setter Mendelssohn made things interesting before 70,423, an upside to the absence of horse racing's 13th Triple Crown victor from the Classic. And it followed other notable performances on the second day of the $30 million championships.

"It was a big ask for the filly and everyone knows she's had a hard year", Gosden told RacingUK. Jockey Florent Geroux collected his fifth win.

Disco Partner was third, a distant 7 1/4 lengths back.

The first two pulled well clear of the rest of the field, with the Khalid Abdullah-owned Enable becoming the first Arc victor to follow up at the Breeders' Cup in the same season. Jockey Paco Lopez earned his first Breeders' Cup victory.

It was business as usual around the Brad Cox barn Sunday morning, one day after capping their banner year with a Breeders' Cup Distaff victory by Monomoy Girl.

That Arc win is a testament to Gosden's skill and Enable's resilience. She earned her 10th win from 11 career starts.
