United States to Grant Waivers to Some Countries Importing Iran Oil

Earlier in the day, Bloomberg reported, citing an anonymous senior official from the U.S. administration, that the United States had agreed to grant eight states, including India, Japan and South Korea, waivers from the upcoming USA sanctions targeting Iranian oil sector.

Iran is already in the grip of an economic crisis and has seen sporadic protests in recent months, as Iranian officials tried to downplay the sanctions and their effects.

"Mogherini and the European ministers ... highlighted the importance of the finance ministers' commitment to Europe's financial mechanism to save the Iran nuclear deal and said the mechanism will be operational in the coming days", IRNA said.

"However, Iran has continued to support regional armed factions and to develop ballistic missiles despite the United Nations restrictions, and did so even when strict global economic sanctions were in place during 2010-2015", the report said.

Sophie Turner, 22, and Maisie Williams, 21, were not impressed with Donald Trump's use of a Game of Thrones meme on Twitter to promote his plans to reinstate the US sanctions against Iran after they were lifted by the Obama administration back in 2015.

Speaking with the reporters at the White House on Friday before leaving on a campaign trail, Trump said Iran was not the same country which it was when he started nearly two years ago.

Iranians burn an image of US President Donald Trump during an anti-US demonstration outside the former US embassy headquarters in the capital Tehran on 9 May 2018 after Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran.

The Trump administration created a list of demands Iran would need to meet for sanctions to be lifted, including completely halting its nuclear and ballistic missile program and ending military engagement in Syria and Yemen.

On Saturday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for reimposing the sanctions.

Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported that the Islamic Republic had started production of the locally-designed Kowsar fighter plane for use in its air force.

He said he welcomed the move, as Turkey had previously warned that the USA sanctions would "negatively impact the peace and economy of neighboring countries like Turkey". Based on Resolution 2231, Iran is supposed to follow the nuclear agreement and Iran has been doing that and other countries of the world are supposed to engage with Iran economically.

"We have advised SWIFT that Treasury will aggressively use its authorities as necessary to continue intense economic pressure on the Iranian regime and that SWIFT would be subject to USA sanctions if it provides financial messaging services to certain designated Iranian financial institutions", Mnuchin said.

"The challenge between the USA and Iran has lasted for 40 years so far and the United States has made various efforts against us: military, economic and media warfare", he said. "We have the knowledge and the capability to manage the country's economic affairs", Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi told state TV. He accuses Tehran of using its oil revenues to fund the activities of militias such as Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and Hamas, and he has pledged to cut off this source of income.

Pompeo said two of the jurisdictions, which he did not identify, will wind down Iranian oil imports to zero in "weeks".

These economic sanctions are just a part of the United States government's total effort to change the behaviour of the Iranian regime, he said.

Turkey imports nearly almost half of its oil from neighbouring Iran.

Pompeo said Washington will issue temporary waivers to the eight Iran oil importers "only because they have demonstrated significant reductions in their crude oil and cooperation on many other fronts".
