Novak Djokovic of Serbia celebrates with his wife Jelena Djokovic after winning his men's Singles finals match.

Novak Djokovic was just too good for Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday's USA open final, racing away to a straight sets win and his third title in NY.

This win should especially feel good for him as he had to sit out last year's U.S. Open while undergoing surgery on his right elbow.

It's incredible. I don't feel sad that I couldn't win grand slams because of them.

If Djokovic is reluctant to speak publicly about the idea of going from his current total of 14 to Nadal's 17 or Federer's 20, the Serb's coach isn't.

The 31-year-old produced a ruthless display as he recorded a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory at Flushing Meadows in NY.

Novak Djokovic wrapped up his great summer with an impressive performance in the US Open men's final against Juan Martin del Potro. He was soon 3-1 up in the second set before Potro carved out his first break point of the match to level at 3-3.

The second set immediately saw the Argentine under pressure on his serve, and though he managed to fend off Djokovic in game one, the relentless pressure told in game three as Del Potro sprayed two forehand errors to lose serve again.

Del Potro insisted he is happy to be playing in the era of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal.

He has now won Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year on three occasions (2011, 2015 and 2018). They hadn't even dropped a set over that run until Babos and Mladenovic got them in the first set on Sunday.

It is the third U.S. Open title of Djokovic's career, and his 14th overall Grand Slam win.

Djokovic was better than del Potro on their many lengthy exchanges, using his trademark body-twisting, limb-splaying court coverage to get to almost every ball, sneakers squeaking around the blue court in Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the roof was closed because of rain. "I don't know when will be my last tournament in this career, but I'm excited to keep surprising myself doing things like this". Djokovic's fourth US Open trophy meant he, Nadal and Federer had now won 50 of the past 60 majors. He played a great match, very smart game.

This time past year Djokovic was injured and uncertain about his future direction.

"I was playing nearly at the limit all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make it because Novak were there every time".

It was a brief request, though, unlike her many other pleas for quiet, mainly as fans were shouting and chanting and clapping in support of del Potro.

Since the 2003 Wimbledon, the Big 3 have won 51 of 62 Grand Slams on the men's side.
