Elon Musk, the billionaire chief executive of Tesla, risked provoking fresh concern from investors on Friday after smoking marijuana on a live web show with USA comedian Joe Rogan.

Musk, who has drawn attention to the company with a series of social media spats, was filmed smoking marijuana and drinking whisky in a 2-1/2-hour live web show with comedian Joe Rogan that swiftly spread across Instagram and other popular apps.

Tesla didn't immediately respond to a morning email requesting more information on a potential replacement or any connection between his departure and the widely reported SEC investigation into Musk's recent Twitter posts, later walked back, about taking Tesla private.

Musk added: "I'm not a regular smoker of weed - nearly never". Marijuana is legal for recreational use in the state of California, although it's still illegal federally. "I'm not a regular smoker of weed", Musk said. Just 17 days after tweeting that he had the funding and investor support secured to buy out some stockholders at $420 a share, the billionaire scrapped the idea without having made a formal proposal to the board.

Musk said he was not as anxious about artificial intelligence than he was previously after "taking a more fatalistic attitude".

Chief Accounting Officer Dave Morton gave notice on Tuesday that he was resigning less than a month into the job, according to a filing. "These things are much more important than creating electric supersonic VTOL", he said. "An electric plane isn't important right now".

"Defendant Musk artificially manipulated the price of Tesla securities with objectively false tweets in order to "burn" the company's short-sellers", Left said, stressing that Musk's actions violated federal securities laws.

Earlier in the day, Reuters reported the prominent short-seller Andrew Left has sued Tesla and Musk, saying Musk fraudulently engineered his since-abandoned plan to take Tesla private to "burn" investors hoping the electric vehicle company's stock price would fall.
