FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi admits Cristiano Ronaldo's exit from Real Madrid took him by surprise and acknowledged it will now have an effect on their LaLiga rivals.

Speaking on Thursday, after beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to win the 2017-18 UEFA Player of the Year award, Modric said that he is was happy to continue Real Madrid.

Lionel Messi was controversially left out of the nominees for FIFA's Men's World Player of the Year prize when they were announced on Monday.

Messi won La Liga with Barcelona; Ronaldo and Modric won the UEFA Champions League for a third consecutive time.

The coach's award is between Didier Deschamps, who led France to the World Cup title, Zlatko Dalic of Croatia, whom Deschamps overcame in the final, and Zinedine Zidane, who quit Real Madrid after a third straight Champions League title.

Liverpool forward Salah had a record-breaking season, scoring 32 goals in a 38-game Premier League season, as well as 44 goals in all competitions for The Reds.

It has nearly become routine to see names such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi fight for the honour to be named best player on the planet.

While Luka Modric also won Champions League with Cristiano Ronaldo past year, but he takes the cherry away with a phenomenal FIFA World Cup campaign with Croatia in France where he led his worldwide side against France.

Modric was also pivotal to that success before inspiring Croatia's run to the World Cup final.

"He's really motivated, even more so after the World Cup and the Champions League", the Uruguay forward added.

Lyon's Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg and German midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan are joined by Brazilian five-time victor Marta in the running for the best women's player after winning the Champions League with the French giants.

The awards ceremony will take place in London on September 24.
