The senator from Arizona became the 31st person to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, according to the Architect of the Capitol website, which says the country's "most eminent citizens" are given the honor.

A choir from the Jesuit-run Brophy College Preparatory school that two of McCain's sons attended sang "Amazing Grace".

Mr McCain's longtime chief of staff, Grant Woods spoke about the senator's "terribly bad driving" and his sense of humour - which drew a chuckle.

Sinatra's My Way paid tribute to a politician who was known for following his own path based on his personal principles.

Twenty-four sitting US senators, four former senators and other leaders were among those expected at Thursday's memorial. The motorcade carrying his American flag-draped casket arrived just before 10 a.m.

Trump, who has feuded publicly with McCain and mocked his military service, received five deferments that got him out of serving in the military.

One man shouted, "We love you!"

The longtime Arizona senator, who died from brain cancer on August 25, was borne into the Capitol by representatives from the different branches of the armed services before former colleagues, friends and family paid their respects.

An estimated 15,000 people filed past the senator's casket to pay their final respects, and McCain sons Doug, Jack and Jimmy, daughter Sidney and daughter-in-law Renee shook hands with some of them.

On Thursday morning, a procession through Phoenix will bring the casket to a memorial service at a Baptist church, with the public invited to line the route along a highway.

"There are times when life can be so cruel, pain so blinding, it's hard to see anything else", Biden said, adding, "In order to survive, we have to remember how they lived, not how they died".
