MENDOCINO Co., 8/6/18 - The monster that is the Mendocino Complex continues to grow, having climbed the ranks of the largest fires in recorded California history, incredibly rapidly. It killed two firefighters and four residents and displaced more than 38,000 people.

The Mendocino Complex Fire is one of over a dozen large fires burning in California at the moment. Dry, hot winds have been fueling the flames.

Trump initiated the spat on Sunday when he tweeted that the fires "are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws", which cause water to be "diverted into the Pacific Ocean", and prevent trees from being cleared.

Fires have scorched at least 290,000 acres so far in 2018 - more than double the area that's normal for this time of year, Cal Fire says.

Cal Fire deputy chief Scott McLean described the wildfires as "extremely fast, extremely aggressive [and] extremely dangerous".

Since we last reported on the fire two days ago it has grown by 120,000 acres, according to the numbers released by CAL FIRE Monday morning.

About 200 active-duty troops from the 14th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, will get a quick course in becoming "wildland firefighters" to battle the deadly wildfires devastating wide swaths of California, the Pentagon said Monday. In all, they have destroyed hundreds of homes, killed eight people - including two firefighters assisting in a wildfire near Yosemite National Park.

The disaster declaration that Trump approved for California on Sunday makes available federal funding to state, local and tribal governments "on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the fix or replacement of facilities damaged by the wildfires and high winds in Shasta County".

The Mendocino Complex Fire expanded almost 80 percent over the weekend and has now scorched more than 283,000 acres north of San Francisco, forcing more than 20,000 people to evacuate and destroying at least 75 homes so far.

Fifty-three of the almost 150 specialists who were requested by USA officials last week arrived at the Northern California Geographic Area Coordination Center in Redding on Monday, NIFC spokeswoman Carrie Bilbao said, while the remaining firefighters were sent to Redmond, Ore.

Last August, JBLM soldiers gave support in battling blazes in northern California, said Army Lt. Col. Jamie Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.

Cal Fire said: "Over the past 48 hours, fire has impacted all of the roads used to access Yosemite Valley, burning dead and downed trees that can become very explosive and fall without warning".
