Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the hospital, and there were public scenes of mourning after his death was announced.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam intends to move the Madras High Court demanding a burial spot at Marina beach, alongside other former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, following the death of its party chief and five-time chief minister M Karunanidhi on Tuesday.

"Ezhundhu Vaa Thalaivaa" (Awake, our leader) and "Vaa, Vaa, Gopalapuram Polaam Vaa" (Come, Come, let's go to Gopalapuram) were among the slogans raised by the emotionally-charged crowd, referring to the locality where the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has a house. It's been a long journey for the his clan that made it to the top of Tamil Nadu politics.

Karunanidhi wasn't just a formidable politician; he was also a man of letters.

Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government rejected DMK's request to allot space for burying the mortal remains of Karunanidhi near party founder C N Annadurai's memorial at the Marina Beach, citing legal hurdles. "Hand over anti-socials to police, they may attempt to tarnish DMK".

Several DMK figures were involved in the film industry before venturing into politics.

Karunanidhi was first elected to the Tamil Nadu assembly in 1957 from the Kulithalai assembly of Thiruchirapalli district.

Tributes have poured in from around India, a clear indication of the stature of the Tamil leader on the federal scene.

In the 1991 elections, AIADMK ousted DMK and Karunanidhi was the sole DMK candidate to have been returned after the electoral battle.

The biggest blot in Karunanidhi's political life was his decision to support the BJP-led government at the centre in 1999 when Jayalalithaa withdrew her support. Kanimozhi who Karunanidhi declared as his literary heir is a second term Rajya Sabha MP and DMK's women wing secretary.

Stalin who founded party's youth wing was politically most active of Karunanidhi's four sons.
