That includes clothing, shoes, school supplies and some electronics.

Starting Friday, Florida's Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday begins.

Virginia's annual sales tax holiday is often associated with back-to-school shopping purchases but the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) encourages all Virginians to print, review and use the VDEM sales tax holiday checklist.

Materials used in a trade or business are not exempt under the sales tax holiday. This is also the bill that provided the new $100 per child tax rebate in 2018.

It's been advertised as beneficial for back-to-school shopping, but it's more than that.

In both states, you will not pay state sales tax on back-to-school gear.

"It's kind of confusing", said Hollenbeck, "because certain categories can have items that are tax free, and those that aren't".

A report, released in July by the Tax Foundation, says temporary tax exemptions are a "political gimmick" that cause more harm than good and fail to solve larger policy issues.

The Department of Revenue said anything considered clothing, by definition, will be sales tax free. If an item qualifies for the exemption under the "sales tax holiday", then all delivery charges associated with that sale are exempt. Coupons and discounts available for items under the tax-free list may still be applied to reduce the item's sales price.
