Dead As Carr Fire In Northern California Continues To Burn

At the 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning Cal Fire briefing held at the Shasta County Fairgrounds in Anderson, firefighter leadership acknowledged they were unable to increase containment overnight from 5 percent and the blaze is spreading in all directions.

At least six people, including two firefighters and two children and their great-grandmother, have been killed in a wildfire that continues to rage through parts of northern California. Here's how you can help those impacted by the Carr Fire: GoFundMe has published a running list of verified campaigns supporting individual families whose homes were destroyed in the fire.

Firefighters discuss plans while battling the Carr Fire in Shasta, Calif., on Thursday, July 26, 2018.

Wildfire Today posted a video of what is referred to as a "fire tornado' that roared down from Keswick Dam just north of Redding to destroy over 125 homes on Friday". Those wishing to donate to the Red Cross can do so by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. The largest fire began in Carr, CA and has doubled in size during the past week. That blaze killed 36-year-old Braden Varney, a heavy equipment operator for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection whose bulldozer rolled over into a ravine July 14.

Almost 40,000 people have been displaced by the blaze, which was spreading on three fronts, Cal Fire officials said on Sunday. Lakeport, home to about 5,000 people, is around 190 kilometres north of San Francisco. Fire crews also managed to halt the spread of the Carr fire within the city of Redding, Gouvea said.

More than 4,000 structures were threatened by the fire, officials said. Northwest Redding saw single-digit relative humidity, winds up to 13 miles per hour and temperatures of 102 degrees, with a Heat Index of 108 on Friday.

Firefighters are battling 17 wildfires across the state, which have consumed a combined 200,000 acres in terrain stretching from Southern California to the OR border, said Jonathan Cox, battalion chief and information officer with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Beyond the Carr fire, U.S. officials are tracking 89 active large fires across 14 states. They've been identified as bulldozer operator Don Ray Smith, of Pollock Pines and Redding fire Inspector Jeremy Stoke.

President Donald Trump on Saturday declared the fire an emergency, authorizing federal funds for disaster relief efforts. She says it's hard to believe.

The latest official update about the blaze includes a sobering admission by fire authorities.

Some evacuations were lifted but officials said Yosemite Valley, the heart of tourism in the park, will remain closed until August 3. So far this year, wildfires have scorched nearly 4.3 million acres (1.7 million hectares) across the country, less than last year but still more than the 3.7 million-acre (1.5 million-hectare) average for the same period over the last decade.

In Southern California, thousands remained evacuated as a suspected arson wildfire burned in the San Jacinto Mountains east of Los Angeles.

"If we don't arrest them for looting, they will be arrested for something else", Redding Police Chief Roger Moor said.

But when they returned Friday, virtually nothing was left of their home but fine particles of ash.

Meanwhile, the Cranston Fire forced the evacuation of over 7,000 people, although some were able to return to their homes early Sunday.

"It's pretty emotional", Terri Hill said. "I'm talking about subdivisions encroaching into the wild land urban interface that put them in the path of these destructive fires".

On Saturday, US authorities called the family into the sheriff's office with news of the search's grim conclusion - and details of a matriarch's final, futile act.
