Tuesday saw Root and England one-day captain Eoin Morgan (88 not out) share an unbroken third-wicket stand of 186.

Willey, who took three for 40 in nine overs, received excellent new-ball support from Durham quick Mark Wood (one for 30). More than anyone Rashid was responsible for the shackling of the Indian batsmen even though there were more economical bowlers on his side - both David Willey and Mark Wood were bang on target at the beginning and end of the innings. India got off to a cautious start, reaching 32/1 from 10 overs, after England won the toss.

Having lost the first of the three matches to the touring party, the number one ODI team rediscovered their form in the following two contests, and Tuesday's loss in Yorkshire was painstakingly one-sided for the thousands of Indian fans. It was Root's second successive hundred.

England then missed a chance to dismiss Kohli when the India captain, on 23, edged a drive against off-spinner Moeen Ali only for wicket-keeper Jos Buttler to drop a hard catch.

India won the first ODI easily, but lost the second on Saturday by 86 runs, and was overwhelmed at Headingley, remaining No. 2 to England in the ODI rankings.

"I think this has an impact for the World Cup", Wood said. There was no great celebration from the England side as the speed of Stokes' throw deceived everyone. "From that point there was no let up".

Rashid´s haul included two wickets for two runs in six balls as he dismissed both India captain Virat Kohli, who top-scored with 71, and Suresh Raina in the 31st over. He deceived Rohit Sharma on the off-stump throughout the over.

Dinesh Karthik, preferred to KL Rahul for this match, then made 21 from 22 balls before he was bowled between bat and pad by Rashid going for a booming drive.

A disbelieving Kohli walked off and Raina (one) then turned Rashid low to Root at leg slip.

Kohli pressed on, however, completing a 55-ball fifty before Rashid struck twice in six balls as India slumped to 158 for five.

James Vince, called up in place of the injured Jason Roy cut the first ball of England's reply, from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, for four.
