The YouTube video that was initially shared on Reddit with the caption, "A priest slaps an infant during his baptism".

The video clip shows a French priest attempting to comfort a crying baby at a baptism ceremony.

The priest then grabs the boy's face to look at him, once again repeating: "Calm down", before he raises his hand and slaps the baby, who screams even louder.

But when the crying doesn't stop, the priest seems to grow frustrated and slaps the baby in the face.

The outraged relatives then stepped in and snatched the baby away from the priest, after watching on in shock.

"He's afraid", the child's father says.

"I'm going to put water on the forehead, and after I'll embrace the young fellow. I was saying "be quiet" but he wouldn't calm down", the priest told France Info radio on Friday. "Slap. My Child. Imma show you that these hands can do more than show you that I'm praying [sic]".

The shocking video of the scene which happened in an unknown French speaking country has gone viral and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

Unbelievably, there were some commenters who defended the priest's actions.

This isn't the first baptism video to cause controversy, with one Greek orthodox priest's enthusiastic technique coming under fire.

In a 40-second clip posted online, the French-speaking priest is seen to lash out in frustration during the ceremony as the tiny child is held by a woman though to be his mother.
