From 1999 to 2016, suicide rates increased in each state by anywhere from 5 percent to 57 percent.

"Our suicide rates for older white men tend to be higher than other numbers so we are definitely talking about individuals who have access to lethal means as well as feeling isolated whether its because we are a rural state or they just don't know where to turn for help, is a contributing factor", Bailey said.

"These findings are disturbing. Relationship problems, financial and job issues, physical health concerns", explained Dr. Anne Shuchat, Deputy Director of the CDC.

Risk of suicide increases when media stories use more dramatic or graphic headlines or images, repeatedly report on the same suicide, explicitly describe the suicide method, and dramatize the death through romanticized headlines or by showing the site of the suicide and pictures of those who are grieving, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention says. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.

Almost 45,000 people committed suicide in 2016, making it one of three leading causes of death on the rise in the United States, along with Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses. It also heads the Governor's Behavioral Health Services Planning Council, that produced the Kansas Suicide Prevention Subcommittee 2017 Annual Report, which outlines steps the State is taking to regarding this issue.

While the murder rate has fallen dramatically over the past four decades, suicide is on the rise, and the reasons are multiple. "What are we doing as a nation to help people to manage these things?"

"Suicide affects us all", Cerel said in the release.

"So we get concerned with celebrity suicides because when there's lots of attention and lots of specific reporting about it in a sensational way people may be more likely to identify with that person", he said. That age group also had the highest rate.

Montana had the highest suicide rate, at 29.2 per 100,000 people per year, while the District of Columbia had the lowest, at 6.9 suicides per 100,000 people per year. She and her colleagues recently analyzed suicides from 1999 to 2016.
