New Joker Standalone Movie Starring Jared Leto Is Officially Happening

United States actor Jared Leto poses as he arrives to attend the European premiere of the film Suicide Squad in central London on August 3, 2016.

All of this news is rather confusing since it was previously announced that Warner Bros. and DC Films are working on another Joker movie with Tod Phillips directing and Martin Scorsese producing.

All of this might explain why, according to sources at Variety, Warner Bros is reportedly thinking about devoting a whole movie to Jared Leto's incarnation of the Joker.

A Suicide Squad sequel is also in the post, due to go into production in 2019, and that's aside from the now in-development The Batman from Matt Reeves, helmsman of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.

There has been no update on Ben Affleck's solo Batman movie, to be directed by Matt Reeves.

The news of Leto's Joker movie going forward all-but-confirms the strategy. Many of these performances, like those by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, are the stuff of acting legend, but then you get Jared Leto's odd take on the character which can perhaps only be described as divisive.

The second film reportedly has Joaquin Phoenix attached to star and will fall under an Origins banner. Jared Leto is a played out actor who takes himself far too seriously, who I would be thrilled to not see except on rewatches of My So-Called Life.

After the shocking reveal that Warner Bros. had plans to make a movie focused on the classic Batman villain the Joker as played by Jared Leto, many fans asked one pressing question: what about the many, many other projects in the works featuring the Clown Prince of Crime? All six - yes, you read that correctly - six of them.
