They talked over a steak dinner Wednesday and chocolate croissants Thursday morning.

"The conditions are putting President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un in a place where we think there could be real progress made by the two of them meeting", he said. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) tweeted after Trump announced the cancellation of the meeting.

Asked of the prospect of the denuclearisation meeting in Singapore going ahead, Mr Trump sounded hopeful.

Kim has invested heavily in North Korea's nuclear weapons development program while starving the country financially and demanding luxury accommodations from foreign nations, including South Korea which covered $2.6 million in travel expenses for him during the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

The summit was previously scheduled for June 12 in Singapore, but President Trump cancelled it last week.

Mr. Trump has said the June 12 summit is likely only the beginning of talks with North Korea, suggesting he may be in this for the long haul.

With relations thawing, the USA has pledged to help rebuild North Korea's economy if it agrees to give up its nuclear weapons. "We're going to continue to shoot for June 12th".

Oh, and the United States/North Korea summit in Singapore is back on.

The letter was hand-delivered to the president by senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol.

On Friday, Trump told the press that the "letter was a very nice letter" and offered to share it with them.

Did Kim Jong Un send Trump that big envelope? A former intelligence chief, Kim is his country's top nuclear weapons negotiator and the highest-ranking North Korean official to meet with a USA president in 18 years.

Kim's letter, to be delivered by Kim Yong Chol, an infamous and sanctioned North Korean official, could have served as an inflection point in the decision-making process.

After the meeting, Trump and Kim Yong Chol posed for photos on the White House lawn.

Kim is the most senior North Korean visitor to the United States since Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok visited Washington in 2000 to meet President Bill Clinton.

An aide to Kim Jong Un has arrived at the White House, becoming the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit in 18 years.

His travel restrictions were lifted this week so he could fly to NY and Washington, DC to meet U.S. officials, the Department of State said.

Trump told reporters after the end of the meeting that he had not yet read the letter.
