At least 13 people swam to safety after the boat capsized, PTI quoted the West Godavari Superintendent of Police Ravi Prakash as saying.

The rescue efforts were on despite darkness, said local legislator V. Rajeswari, who was supervising the rescue and relief operations. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams from Kakinada and Visakhapatnam had also been deployed.

Apparently due to the heavy wind and storm, they have locked the boat doors, which in turn became a curse for the passengers.

Officials said since the boat capsized at a remote area and information on what exactly happened was not received.

Locals claim that almost 50 people were on board and 10 swam to safety.

Giving an update about rescue operation, the officer said, "We have been able to trace the location of the boat".

The incident came close on the heels of a boat with over 100 tourists catching fire in Godavari River in the same district on May 11. He also announced government job would be provided to an eligible person each from the families of the victims and a house would also be built for them. The rescue teams had to cut up a part of the boat to bring out the bodies.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials to launch rescue operations on war footing.

Of them, 20 passengers got off at Manturu village while the boat continued its onward journey to Rajamahendravaram with the remaining passengers, the release issued by the Information and Public Relations Department commissioner said. He spoke to the District Collector and other officials over phone.
